PLLA Threads FAQ
Q1. What are PLLA threads?
PLLA threads are absorbable lifting threads made from poly-L-lactic acid, a biodegradable polymer used in aesthetic and medical products. They are placed under the skin to provide temporary mechanical support while the surrounding tissue undergoes a gradual remodeling response.
PLLA threads are different from injectable PLLA products. A thread is a physical device with a defined structure, while an injectable product is a suspension. The thread design, composition, gauge, length, delivery system and labeled absorption time depend on the specific product.
Q2. How do PLLA threads work?
PLLA threads work through two related effects: an immediate mechanical effect from the thread structure and a gradual tissue-remodeling response as the material degrades.
A smooth thread does not provide the same mechanical anchoring as a cog or coned thread. The final result therefore depends on the thread design, placement, fixation, treatment area and practitioner technique—not on the PLLA material alone.
Q3. How long do PLLA threads take to dissolve?
There is no single absorption time for every PLLA thread. Professional sources commonly describe PLLA thread products in the range of approximately 12–24 months, while individual product documents may state a different period [1].
The exact timeline depends on the product formulation, whether the thread contains another polymer, thread diameter and design, placement and individual tissue response. For a specific SKU, the product IFU and packaging are the controlling sources.
Q4. How long do PLLA thread-lift results last?
PLLA thread-lift results develop gradually and are commonly evaluated over 12–24 months. A clinical study of PLLA/PLGA coned threads reported measurable improvement through 24 months, with scores beginning to decline after approximately 18 months [2].
This does not mean every product or patient will have the same result period. Result duration depends on thread structure, placement, tissue laxity, skin condition and individual response. Absorption time and visible-result duration should not be treated as identical.
Q5. Do PLLA threads stimulate collagen?
PLLA threads may support a gradual collagen-remodeling response around the treated area. This is why their intended effect is usually described as progressive rather than limited to the immediate lifting effect.
The available evidence supports the mechanism, but it does not establish a fixed amount of collagen production or guarantee the same result for every patient. Evidence from injectable PLLA should not be presented as direct proof of the performance of every PLLA thread product.
Q6. What is the difference between PLLA threads and injectable PLLA?
Both use the PLLA polymer family, but they are different product forms with different functions:
- PLLA threads: physical devices placed under the skin; they provide mechanical support and a local tissue response.
- Injectable PLLA: a suspension injected into tissue; it is used for gradual collagen and volume-related effects and does not provide mechanical anchoring.
Their absorption timelines, clinical evidence, regulatory status and safety information cannot be transferred from one product form to the other. A physician determines whether either approach is appropriate for an individual patient.
Q7. Which areas are PLLA threads used for?
PLLA threads are generally used for selected facial lifting and contour-support applications, such as the brow, midface and lower face. A specific product may have a narrower or different labeled application area.
The appropriate area depends on the thread design, product documentation, treatment objective and patient anatomy. Neck, body and other specialized applications should not be assumed to be covered unless they are supported by the product IFU and the practitioner’s clinical protocol.
Q8. Are PLLA threads biocompatible, and what should clinics check?
PLLA is a biodegradable polymer with a history of use in medical materials, but the material name alone does not establish the suitability of every PLLA thread product. Product-level assessment depends on the formulation, manufacturing process, sterility, registration documents, intended use and IFU.
